Is Your Dream Trip Protected? Why Travel Insurance is Essential

Why Travel Insurance Is Essential

Let’s face it—travel doesn’t always go according to plan. Flights get delayed, bags go missing, people get sick, and sometimes the unexpected gets in the way of a long-awaited vacation. That’s where travel insurance comes in. Think of it as your safety net—a way to protect your trip and your wallet when things don’t go as planned.

Here’s what travel insurance typically covers:

  • Trip cancellations or interruptions
  • Medical emergencies while abroad
  • Travel delays or missed connections
  • Lost, stolen, or delayed luggage

Protects Your Investment

Trips to Europe and other far-off places aren’t cheap—and many parts of a vacation (like flights, tours, or hotels) can be non-refundable. If you need to cancel for a covered reason, travel insurance can reimburse those costs. That means less stress and more confidence when you’re ready to hit "book."

Safeguards Your Belongings

If your luggage takes a detour (or disappears entirely), insurance can help replace the essentials and cover lost items. No more scrambling to buy a new wardrobe or wondering how you'll get by without your things.

Covers Delays and Missed Connections

If your flight gets delayed or you miss a connection due to weather or mechanical issues, insurance can cover hotel stays, meals, and rebooking costs. It helps turn a frustrating situation into something manageable—and maybe even comfortable.

Real-Life Peace of Mind

We’ve seen it firsthand: a couple had to cancel their $10,000 anniversary trip due to a medical emergency. Luckily, they had travel insurance, and their non-refundable expenses were covered. Later, they were able to rebook the same trip—without financial stress.

It's Not Optional. It’s Smart.

In an unpredictable world, travel insurance isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s a must. That’s why we make it easy to include a trusted policy in your travel quote. It’s one small step that can make a huge difference if things go sideways.

Travel confidently—because peace of mind is part of the journey.

Travel Insurance: What You Need to Know

Is travel insurance really worth it?
Yes—without a doubt. Travel insurance can help cover unexpected cancellations, delays, lost baggage, medical emergencies, and more. It gives you peace of mind and can save you from surprise expenses if your trip doesn’t go exactly as planned.

Who should consider getting travel insurance?
Anyone planning a trip. But especially if you’re booking an international trip, a non-refundable itinerary, or have any health concerns. Travel insurance adds a safety net so you can travel with confidence—knowing you’re protected if something unexpected happens.

Can I still add insurance after I book my trip?
Yes, you can certainly purchase travel insurance after booking your trip, but it’s always advisable to secure it as soon as your reservations are in place. Doing so not only broadens your coverage options, including those crucial early-purchase benefits like pre-existing condition waivers, but it also maximizes your peace of mind.

What happens if I decide not to get travel insurance?
It’s your choice—but it’s important to understand the risks. If something goes wrong, like a last-minute cancellation or medical emergency abroad, you may be responsible for those costs. Travel insurance helps make sure you're not stuck footing the bill for something beyond your control.

Did you know?

  • Not all credit cards have travel protection.
  • Credit cards that have coverage will vary on types of coverage and limits.
  • Medical expense coverage offered through credit cards may not meet your needs.
  • U.S. health insurance plans typically do not cover regular and routine medical care required while traveling internationally or overseas emergency care.
  • Many travel insurance plans offer a waiver of the pre-existing medical conditions exclusion if purchased within the timeframe set forth in the policy.

What the New Rankings Mean for You If “safe, easy, and inspiring” is your 2026 brief, the newest data lands with good news. Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection (BHTP) just released its annual Safest Places for Travelers research—and there are some notable shifts. Headline: The Netherlands takes the top spot for countries, and Reykjavík, Copenhagen, and Zürich lead the city list. Safest countries (top 10): Netherlands Australia Austria Iceland Canada New Zealand UAE Switzerland Japan Ireland. Safest cities (top tier): Reykjavík, Copenhagen, Zürich (with long-time stalwarts like Tokyo and Singapore still ranking strongly). How BHTP builds the rankings (and why they matter) BHTP blends traveler survey data (how safe people actually felt on the ground) with external safety indices (infrastructure, health care access, risk metrics, etc.). That combination makes the list especially useful for families, first-timers, and anyone who wants solid logistics with low friction. What changed for 2026 The Netherlands jumps to #1. Think immaculate rail links, bike-first cities, and traveler-friendly English—plus cultural depth beyond the big hitters. UAE breaks into the top 10 at #7, reflecting years of investment in safety and visitor infrastructure. Northern Europe still dominates cities : Reykjavík and Copenhagen remain gold standards for walkability, transit, and low petty-crime rates.

Let's start with a pop-quiz: Which country has the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites? It's Italy, with a whopping 58 UNESCO World Heritage Sites due to its rich history as the center of the Roman Empire and the heart of the Renaissance. But as of 2025, there are 1,199 UNESCO World Heritage Sites spread across 167 countries, with 900 categorized as cultural, 218 as natural, and 39 as mixed properties. Here are a few of my favorites: From sweeping natural landscapes to ancient cultural treasures, these UNESCO-designated wonders offer unforgettable travel experiences. 1. The Galápagos Islands, Ecuador This famed archipelago is celebrated as the birthplace of Charles Darwin’s evolutionary insight. Rich with endemic wildlife—giant tortoises, blue‑footed boobies, Galápagos penguins, and marine iguanas—it is a living sanctuary that embodies nature's adaptability and beauty. 2. Serengeti National Park, Tanzania A timeless symbol of Africa’s wild heart, Serengeti National Park delivers one of the planet’s greatest natural spectacles—the Great Migration. Each year, over a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras thunder across its vast plains in search of water and fresh grazing. Spanning more than 14,750 square kilometers, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a haven for wildlife and a bucket-list safari destination. 3. Iguazú National Park, Argentina/Brazil Home to more than 275 waterfalls stretching nearly two miles across tropical rainforest, Iguazú is a captivating UNESCO site with breathtaking views, cascading cascades, and abundant wildlife. Popular features include the vantage points at Devil’s Throat and the Salto Tres Mosqueteros. 4. Mont Saint‑Michel, France A rocky tidal island crowned by a majestic Gothic abbey, Mont Saint‑Michel emerges from the sea with a fairytale aura. Medieval ramparts, narrow staircases, and sweeping views of vast tidal flats create a timeless environment that’s both spiritual and architectural.

Welcome, Europe Traveler! One of the great joys of traveling in Europe is discovering the subtle—and not-so-subtle—differences from life back home. Hotel star ratings are a prime example. While U.S. travelers may associate stars with subjective quality assessments, in Europe, a 4- or 5-star designation typically reflects a specific checklist of objective criteria.
