Escape Europe's Summer Crowds

Alternatives for Summer 2025

Naxos, Greece

Maybe you've heard the term "overtourism" tossed around—or maybe you've just noticed the side effects creeping into your travels ๐Ÿง

Think: lottery systems for iconic hikes, entry fees for once-free landmarks, or entire destinations hitting pause on tourism just to recover.

It’s no secret that some of the world’s most beloved destinations are feeling the strain—overcrowded streets, worn-down historical sites, and small towns overwhelmed by day-trippers. In response, places around the world are introducing visitor caps, reservation systems, and seasonal closures to protect their beauty and culture.

๐Ÿ‘‰ But here’s the thing: you don’t have to follow the crowds to experience somewhere extraordinary. The world is full of equally stunning alternatives—places where your visit can support lesser-known destinations while offering a richer, more personal experience.

And honestly, who doesn’t want that?

Try These Instead

“I'm going to Europe!” says everyone and their brother… but nine times out of ten, they mean the most visited destinations in Europe. If you want to skip the crowds, try these overlooked gems instead โคต๏ธ

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น Instead of the Amalfi Coast... consider the Douro Valley, Portugal

Rolling vineyards, charming riverfront villages, and stunning scenery without the traffic jams.

Sip on world-renowned port wine, cruise along the Douro River, and explore the terraced landscapes.

๐Ÿ๏ธ Instead of Santorini... consider Naxos, Greece

Whitewashed charm, crystal-clear waters, and authentic Greek culture—without the cruise ship congestion. Wander the old town’s Venetian castle, relax on the golden sands of Agios Prokopios Beach, and explore ancient ruins like the Temple of Apollo.

๐ŸŽจ Instead of Barcelona... consider Ljubljana, Slovenia

A charming, artsy capital with colorful architecture, a thriving food scene, and a laid-back vibe. Stroll along the Ljubljanica River, explore the vibrant Metelkova art district, and visit the hilltop Ljubljana Castle for stunning city views.

In April, I took a group of longtime friends on a custom-designed trip through Morocco. What unfolded over nine days was one of the most memorable, immersive journeys I’ve taken in a while. Morocco has a way of getting under your skin—in the best way. Here’s how it went.

Every now and then, a trip comes along that’s not just beautiful—but meaningful. This transformational itinerary blends the energy of Mexico City with the natural wonder of the Monarch butterfly migration in the mountains of Michoacán. It’s ideal for travelers who want more than just a vacation—they want an experience that inspires reflection, awe, and connection. Here’s a sample outline of how I’d design this journey for a client (or for you!).

Welcome, Europe Traveler! One of the great joys of traveling in Europe is discovering the subtle—and not-so-subtle—differences from life back home. Hotel star ratings are a prime example. While U.S. travelers may associate stars with subjective quality assessments, in Europe, a 4- or 5-star designation typically reflects a specific checklist of objective criteria.

Last week I had the chance to sail on Holland America’s Nieuw Statendam through the Eastern Caribbean. We were looking forward to this quick escape since the itinerary had the perfect mix of vibrant islands, lazy sea days, and just enough adventure. Holland America is the oldest cruise line in the US; they started off about 150 years ago transporting European immigrants from Rotterdam, Netherlands to the US. They now have ships cruising the entire world but are still honoring their Dutch roots – which is dear to me because my roots are Dutch as well! Here’s how it all unfolded.
