🇲🇽 Butterflies, Culture & Wonder: A Journey Into the Heart of Mexico

Stefan Terwindt • May 26, 2025

Every now and then, a trip comes along that’s not just beautiful—but meaningful. This transformational itinerary blends the energy of Mexico City with the natural wonder of the Monarch butterfly migration in the mountains of Michoacán. It’s ideal for travelers who want more than just a vacation—they want an experience that inspires reflection, awe, and connection.

Here’s a sample outline of how I’d design this journey for a client (or for you!).

Your Journey at a Glance:

  • Start in vibrant Mexico City – culture, cuisine, and contrast
  • Then head to Michoacán’s butterfly sanctuaries – where millions of Monarchs gather each winter
  • End with time to reflect – returning either to Mexico City or a quiet nearby escape.

Days 1–3: Mexico City – Art, Architecture & Street Food

Mexico City sets the stage with its stunning blend of ancient and avant-garde.
Travelers can enjoy:

  • A private tour of Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul and Coyoacán’s leafy streets
  • Exploring the historic center with its baroque cathedrals and Aztec ruins
  • Sampling street food in Colonia Narvarte, or a chef-led market tour
  • Nights in a boutique hotel with rooftop views, stylish interiors, and spa access

Whether clients want fine dining, design, or cultural deep-dives, CDMX delivers—all with that buzzy, energetic heartbeat that makes you want to keep exploring.

Days 4–6: Michoacán – Witness the Monarch Migration

From the city, a private driver and guide escort travelers into the forested highlands of Michoacán, home to the UNESCO-listed Monarch Biosphere Reserve.

Choose from:

  • Sierra Chincua
  • El Rosario
  • Piedra Herrada

All offer access to the butterfly sanctuaries where Monarchs gather in mesmerizing clusters. Guided hikes take you through cool, misty trails to the heart of the migration. Travelers won’t just see butterflies—they’ll hear them. The gentle flutter of thousands of wings is unforgettable.

Accommodations here are rustic-chic: mountain lodges or eco-hotels with fireplaces, warm meals, and access to local communities.

Why This Trip Stands Out

This itinerary pairs introspection in nature with creative energy in the city.
It’s ideal for:

  • Solo travelers seeking transformation
  • Couples looking for something meaningful
  • Families introducing their kids to conservation and culture

And as always, I tailor every trip to fit the pace, interests, and comfort level of the traveler. Want to add on a few days in San Miguel de Allende or finish with a beach stay? We can do that too.

🗓 Monarch season begins in December and runs through March. Now’s the time to start planning.

Ready to create something unforgettable for yourself? This is the kind of journey that stays with you long after you return.

In April, I took a group of longtime friends on a custom-designed trip through Morocco. What unfolded over nine days was one of the most memorable, immersive journeys I’ve taken in a while. Morocco has a way of getting under your skin—in the best way. Here’s how it went.

Welcome, Europe Traveler! One of the great joys of traveling in Europe is discovering the subtle—and not-so-subtle—differences from life back home. Hotel star ratings are a prime example. While U.S. travelers may associate stars with subjective quality assessments, in Europe, a 4- or 5-star designation typically reflects a specific checklist of objective criteria.

Last week I had the chance to sail on Holland America’s Nieuw Statendam through the Eastern Caribbean. We were looking forward to this quick escape since the itinerary had the perfect mix of vibrant islands, lazy sea days, and just enough adventure. Holland America is the oldest cruise line in the US; they started off about 150 years ago transporting European immigrants from Rotterdam, Netherlands to the US. They now have ships cruising the entire world but are still honoring their Dutch roots – which is dear to me because my roots are Dutch as well! Here’s how it all unfolded.
