Unmissable UNESCO World Heritage Sites Around the Globe

Stefan Terwindt • August 14, 2025

Let's start with a pop-quiz: Which country has the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites?

It's Italy, with a whopping 58 UNESCO World Heritage Sites due to its rich history as the center of the Roman Empire and the heart of the Renaissance.

But as of 2025, there are 1,199 UNESCO World Heritage Sites spread across 167 countries, with 900 categorized as cultural, 218 as natural, and 39 as mixed properties. Here are a few of my favorites: From sweeping natural landscapes to ancient cultural treasures, these UNESCO-designated wonders offer unforgettable travel experiences.

1. The Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

This famed archipelago is celebrated as the birthplace of Charles Darwin’s evolutionary insight. Rich with endemic wildlife—giant tortoises, blue‑footed boobies, Galápagos penguins, and marine iguanas—it is a living sanctuary that embodies nature's adaptability and beauty.

2. Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

A timeless symbol of Africa’s wild heart, Serengeti National Park delivers one of the planet’s greatest natural spectacles—the Great Migration. Each year, over a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras thunder across its vast plains in search of water and fresh grazing. Spanning more than 14,750 square kilometers, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a haven for wildlife and a bucket-list safari destination.

3. Iguazú National Park, Argentina/Brazil

Home to more than 275 waterfalls stretching nearly two miles across tropical rainforest, Iguazú is a captivating UNESCO site with breathtaking views, cascading cascades, and abundant wildlife. Popular features include the vantage points at Devil’s Throat and the Salto Tres Mosqueteros.

4. Mont Saint‑Michel, France

A rocky tidal island crowned by a majestic Gothic abbey, Mont Saint‑Michel emerges from the sea with a fairytale aura. Medieval ramparts, narrow staircases, and sweeping views of vast tidal flats create a timeless environment that’s both spiritual and architectural.

5. Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Stretching over 2,300 km off Queensland’s coast, this is the world's largest coral reef system. Pristine and biodiverse, the reef supports vibrant ecosystems—making snorkeling or diving here an immersive encounter with marine life.

6. Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Stretching across nearly 400 sq km, this vast temple complex is the world's largest religious monument. Built in the 12th century by the Khmer for Hindu ceremonies and later adapted to Buddhist worship, it is decorated with detailed bas‑reliefs and grand towers. Sunrise over the central tower is a traveler favorite.

7. Machu Picchu, Peru

Nestled high in the Andes, this 15th-century Inca citadel is an iconic pilgrimage of archaeology and mountain views. Visitors honor the steep terraces, temples, and sophisticated masonry, typically reached via train or the historic Inca Trail. Tourism is now managed with daily caps to protect the fragile site.

8. Petra, Jordan

Carved into rose-hued cliffs by the Nabataeans over 2,000 years ago, Petra’s monumental façades—like the famed Treasury—are revealed via a narrow canyon known as the Siq. Exploring on foot through its archaeological wonders is a journey back in time.

9. Great Wall of China

This sprawling defense structure extends across more than 13,000 miles. Visitors commonly explore restored sections near Beijing—such as Badaling and Mutianyu—while more adventurous travelers venture into untouched portions worn by history. The wall offers breathtaking panoramas and insight into China’s past.

10. The Colosseum, Rome

Emblematic of Ancient Rome, the Colosseum is a vast amphitheater dating to the 1st century AD. It once hosted gladiatorial games and spectacles for thousands. Today, it’s one of Italy’s most visited and well-preserved historical sites.

Final Thoughts

Visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites is more than sightseeing—it’s connecting with stories, traditions, and ecosystems that have shaped our world. Whether you’re drawn to ancient civilizations, architectural marvels, or ecological wonders, these destinations inspire curiosity, offer perspective, and remind us why stewardship matters.

Planning tips:

  • Many sites—especially Guatemala and Machu Picchu—limit daily visitors to reduce wear and tear.
  • Aim for non‑peak seasons or early hours to avoid crowds and enjoy unique photo lighting.
  • Respect local regulations and stay on designated paths to support preservation efforts.

Welcome, Europe Traveler! One of the great joys of traveling in Europe is discovering the subtle—and not-so-subtle—differences from life back home. Hotel star ratings are a prime example. While U.S. travelers may associate stars with subjective quality assessments, in Europe, a 4- or 5-star designation typically reflects a specific checklist of objective criteria.

Last week I had the chance to sail on Holland America’s Nieuw Statendam through the Eastern Caribbean. We were looking forward to this quick escape since the itinerary had the perfect mix of vibrant islands, lazy sea days, and just enough adventure. Holland America is the oldest cruise line in the US; they started off about 150 years ago transporting European immigrants from Rotterdam, Netherlands to the US. They now have ships cruising the entire world but are still honoring their Dutch roots – which is dear to me because my roots are Dutch as well! Here’s how it all unfolded.
