Spain and Portugal
TRAVEL PLANNING
Spain and Portugal are two of Europe’s best choices for travelers who want culture, food, wine, history, coastlines, and strong value in one trip. The cities are lively. The landscapes are varied. The hotels can be charming and personal. The food alone can shape the whole journey.
Why Spain and Portugal work well together
Character
Spain and Portugal share the Iberian Peninsula, but
they feel very different. Portugal is compact, soulful, and often easier to navigate. Lisbon and Porto are strong city anchors, while the Douro Valley adds wine, river views, and quiet countryside. Spain is larger and more varied. Madrid feels grand and local at the same time. Seville is warm, colorful, and deeply atmospheric. Granada brings Moorish history and the Alhambra. Barcelona adds design, architecture, coastline, and Mediterranean energy.
Variety
Together, they give travelers a rich trip with
plenty of contrast. You can build a food and wine journey, a history trip, a first-time Europe itinerary, a slower retirement trip, or a family trip with adult children.
Focus
The key is not trying to see every major city. Portugal alone can fill 8 to 10 days. Spain alone can fill two weeks. Combining both usually works best when you have at least 12 to 16 days or when you focus on one part of each country.
A Spain and Portugal trip can be simple, but it should not be casual.
Lisbon, Porto, Madrid, Seville, Granada, Barcelona, the Douro Valley, and the Algarve all sound tempting. The hard part is deciding what belongs in the trip - and what should wait for next time. NuVia Travel helps you make those choices.
Who this trip is best for
Spain and Portugal are a great fit for busy travelers who want a rewarding Europe trip without the stress of planning every hotel, train, and tour. They also work well for retired couples who want good food, comfortable pacing, and fewer hotel changes.
Families with adult children often like this region because it has something for everyone. There is history, nightlife, architecture, beaches, wine, shopping, and day trips. First-time Europe travelers like it because the major cities are exciting but not as overwhelming as some larger multi-country routes.
Spain and Portugal are also excellent for
milestone trips. Birthdays, anniversaries, retirement travel, and long-postponed Europe trips all work beautifully here.
River cruise clients may want the Douro River with extra time in Porto and Lisbon. Mediterranean cruise clients may want a Barcelona or Lisbon pre-cruise stay.
NuVia Travel designs premium custom trips for travelers who want a polished plan, smart routing, well-chosen hotels, and trusted support. Some clients want us to build everything from scratch. Others want expert input on a trip they have already started planning.
Sample Itinerary Ideas
9 Days
A 9-day Portugal trip could include Lisbon, Sintra, Porto, and the Douro Valley. This is ideal for travelers who want a strong first visit with private touring, scenic food experiences, and not too many hotel changes.
10 Days
A 10-day Spain trip could include Madrid, Seville, Granada, and Barcelona. This is a strong first-time Spain route, but it needs careful rail and flight planning to avoid long travel days.
14 Days
A 14-day Spain and Portugal trip could include Lisbon, Porto, Madrid, Seville, and Barcelona. This gives you the highlights of both countries, though the pace should stay realistic.
16 Days
A 16-day Iberian food and wine trip could include Lisbon, the Douro Valley, Porto, San Sebastian, Rioja, Madrid, and Barcelona. This is a better fit for travelers who have been to Europe before and want a more culinary focus.
Flexible
A slower premium trip could focus only on Portugal and southern Spain. Lisbon, the Alentejo, Seville, Cordoba, Granada, and Malaga can make a beautiful route with more warmth and less backtracking.
Best time to visit
March to November
March, April, May, September, October, and November are usually the best months for Spain and Portugal. Spring brings flowers, good walking weather, and long days. Fall brings warm light, harvest energy, and excellent food and wine experiences.
June
June can be very good, especially in northern Portugal, northern Spain, and coastal areas. July and August are better for beaches and family schedules, but cities like Seville, Madrid, Granada, and Lisbon can be very hot.
December
Winter can work well for city trips, especially Lisbon, Madrid, Seville, and Barcelona, with fewer crowds and better hotel value.
For a premium trip, I usually favor spring or fall. The weather supports touring, the evenings are pleasant, and the pace feels more comfortable.
How NuVia Travel plans the logistics
The most important question is how to connect the pieces. Portugal is fairly easy by private transfer, train, or driver. Spain has excellent high-speed rail on many major routes. But combining both countries can require a flight, a long train day, or a smart open-jaw flight plan.
We help choose the most comfortable route. That may mean flying into Lisbon and home from Barcelona. It may mean skipping one famous city so the trip feels better. It may mean using private drivers for wine country and trains between major cities.
The goal is to build a trip you will actually enjoy, not the longest itinerary.

River cruises, Mediterranean cruises and extensions
Portugal is one of Europe’s best river cruise destinations because of the Douro. A Douro cruise pairs naturally with Porto and Lisbon. Spain is a major Mediterranean cruise hub, especially Barcelona. Lisbon is also a strong cruise port for Atlantic and western Mediterranean sailings.
NuVia can help whether your cruise is already booked or still being considered. We can plan pre-cruise hotels, private transfers, city touring, food experiences, and post-cruise extensions.
What NuVia Travel can help with
NuVia Travel can help with custom itinerary design, premium hotels, private guides, food and wine tours, restaurant suggestions, airport transfers, private drivers, train planning, domestic flight planning, Douro River cruise guidance, Mediterranean cruise guidance, pre-cruise and post-cruise tours, travel insurance guidance, and support before and during your trip.

FAQs
How long should a Spain and Portugal trip be?
For both countries, 12 to 16 days is ideal. For one country, 8 to 10 days can work well.
Should I visit Portugal before Spain?
Often, yes. Lisbon or Porto can be a gentle start, then Spain adds more scale and energy. But the best order depends on flights and your preferred cities.
